HOMEMADE EXFOLIATOR - ESPRESSO, LEMON & OLIVE OIL

I love experimenting with different skincare products, but it brings me great joy when I discover a food or plant you can apply directly onto your face, that has the exact benefits your beautiful skin needs.

We know that exfoliating your face 1-2 times a week is a must (don't forget to exfoliate your body too), and I've experimented with many different foods until I created a simple combination which I think is perfect for me and could be perfect for you. If you’re a Nice Italian Girl (or Boy) chances are, you definitely have these three ingredients in your home.

The reason I like this combination of ingredients is because they have insane health benefits for your skin and I can make a big batch that will keep forever, as opposed to using avocado or egg whites. I find when I have to make a homemade exfoliator right before I need to use it, it sways my lazy ass from doing it period.

Make this fun by finding a cute air tight jar and get started!

Ground Espresso

Ground espresso gently scrubs dead skin cells away and unclogs pores fighting acne. It also contains caffeic acid which is an antioxidant that:

  • Boosts collagen reducing cells aging prematurely.

  • Protects skin from free radicals, germs and pollution.

  • Protects skin against UV rays (I would not rely on this as sun protection though).

  • Dilates blood vessels stimulating the blood flow in your skin which naturally tightens and brightens, calms inflammation, and reduces the fluid buildup (puffiness) and dark circles under your eyes.

The main reason I like using ground espresso over sugar, salt or oats as the scrub portion of my exfoliator is because the grinds are super fine and really get into your pores, plus it is more gentle on my facial skin.

Limone (Lemon)

Everyone knows that lemons are rich in Vitamin C and critic acid - which is an anti-oxidant. The skincare industry always says that Vitamin C is the “BLT” of skincare. It brightens, lightens and tightens:

  • Brightens - Lemons are anti-bacterial. They balance your pH levels, protect your skin from free radicals, germs and pollution, and fight oily skin.

  • Lightens - They fade age spots, dark spots and blemishes.

  • Tightens - Like the espresso, lemons boost collagen reducing cells aging prematurely.

Olive Oil

The main reason I mix in olive oil is because it’s an intense moisturizer that balances out the espresso and lemon. When I use it, my skin is so soft I sometimes don’t even need to moisturize afterwards, but I do anyways because I have OCD.

But olive oil is also:

  • An antioxidant and anti-bacterial, so everything you just read above, olive oil does that too.

  • Contains fat-soluble vitamins A, D, K and very importantly E which can treat psoriasis and eczema.

Directions

I usually squeeze half a lemon, mix that with a tablespoon of olive oil, and add the ground espresso until the texture is like wet sand. This is the ratio I use and you can multiply it if you want to make more. If you can make a sand castle with it, it's good to go!
